Natural Tunnel State Park is accepting applications for a Volunteer Coordinator position.
Job Summary:
Coordinate the park’s complex volunteer program. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, onboarding, and training of new volunteers to build and sustain the volunteer program. The position works closely with park staff and volunteers to support training and scheduling needs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintaining the volunteer database and records, posting volunteer opportunities, and distributing a volunteer newsletter.
- Actively seeks and coordinates volunteer groups such as Alternative Spring Break, Camp hosts, Youth Conservation Corps, scout groups, AmeriCorps, etc.
- Assists with grant applications and record keeping.
- May be required to perform other park-related duties during emergencies or on a nonrecurring basis.
- Requires regular work on weekends, holidays, and evenings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in recruiting, scheduling, and supervising volunteers and volunteer groups.
- Ability to organize, to prepare for projects, and to develop, plan, facilitate, schedule, and coordinate special events.
- Experience communicating verbally, in social media, emails, and newsletters.
- Ability to multitask and pay attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in being the point of contact for the organization and special events.
- Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt appropriate courses of action.
- Strong computer skills required for utilizing databases and other systems.
Additional Considerations:
- Education or experience in parks and recreation, education, communication, marketing, or public administration.
- Experience in park interpretation, outdoor recreation, volunteer management, or specialist event coordination.
- Ability to use basic landscaping and construction tools to lead volunteer groups in the field.
- Knowledge of and ability to conduct interpretive-based programming is a plus.
- Experience working with volunteers in a capacity that leads them and utilizes their skills to enhance the park and its offerings.
- Ability to recruit volunteers as well as develop relationships and connections with volunteer individuals and groups.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
