Tough-rooted sycamores (Platanus occidentalis), many of them re-sprouted following flood damage, cling to a rocky shore of the Potomac River in Mather Gorge, downstream from Great Falls in Great Falls Park, Fairfax county.  Scattered herbs are rooted in sand deposited between the boulders. © DCR-DNH, Gary P.
