Join a ranger for National Trails Day for a guided hike along the Wheaton Trail to explore the opening moments of the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. As Confederate forces retreated west along Deatonsville Road on April 6, 1865, Union troops caught up with their rear guard near the Hillsman Farm, sparking the first clash of the battle. Along the trail, learn how the weather, landscape, and creek itself played a part in the Confederate Army's ultimate surrender. This hike offers a chance to walk the grounds where the battle began and discover how these events contributed to the final days of the American Civil War.
Participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes, layered clothing, sunscreen, and bug spray. The park offers a water bottle filling station for free, and dogs are welcome so long as they are on a leash no longer than six feet in length and under the control of their handlers at all times.
This guided hike will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. near the parking lot at the Hillsman House and is subject to cancellation if adverse weather conditions should arise. For questions and more information, contact Gracie.Swartout@dcr.virginia.gov.
