HUDDLESTON, Va. – Smith Mountain Lake State Park is excited to announce the return of its popular Winter Lecture Series, presented by The Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
Now in its 21st year, this event offers an exciting opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the region through engaging presentations and discussions led by expert speakers.
The 2026 series kicks off on Jan. 11 with an informative program on the Smith Mountain Lake Association, led by member Mary Colligan. Founded in 1969, SMLA is the lake’s oldest and largest volunteer organization, dedicated to protecting water quality and promoting safe recreation.
From 3-4 p.m., Colligan will share insights into the association’s stewardship efforts and its ongoing mission to safeguard the lake’s ecosystem. Colligan brings a wealth of experience to her volunteer work with SMLA. She holds a master’s degree in marine affairs and spent over two decades as a wildlife biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service.
The Winter Lecture Series is held in the park’s Discovery Center and also features programs on Feb. 8, March 8 and April 12. Each lecture offers attendees the chance to learn from experts on topics related to nature, conservation and local history.
