When you think of Smith Mountain Lake State Park, you probably think of summer boating and swimming. But the fun doesn’t stop at this 1,248-acre park just because it’s winter. 

Cold-weather fishing on Virginia’s second-largest freshwater lake is just the beginning of what you can enjoy during the off-season.  

Whether you're an angler chasing your next big catch or a nature lover looking for a quiet getaway, here’s how to make the most of a winter visit to this Southwest Virginia park.

If you’re willing to brave the chill, Smith Mountain Lake State Park offers a variety of winter fishing options. You can head to the boat launch if you want to bundle up and get on the water or cast a line from the shore or the accessible 112-foot-long fishing pier.  

As the water temperature drops below 55°F, striped bass become more active, making this a good time for targeting trophy-sized fish. 

You may have luck fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass near points and rocks or crappie near dock structures or submerged timber and brush piles. 

Don’t forget to dress in layers and bring gloves that still allow you to bait hooks and handle your gear.

Hiking 

With the leaves down, the park’s 13 trails offer clear views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The crisp air and quiet woods make for a refreshing hike. Trails like Turtle Island and Walton Creek are great for winter treks with water views. 

Wildlife watching and photography 

Winter is a great time to spot bald eagles, deer and foxes. The bare trees make it easier to see wildlife, and the winter light is perfect for photography. Bring binoculars and a camera; you never know what you’ll spot. 

Winter glamping 

The park’s 20 climate-controlled cabins stay open year-round, offering a rustic getaway. Some of the cabins have water views, but they are all simply furnished and have kitchens and bathrooms. Cabins also have a microwave, refrigerator, oven, dishes, cooking utensils, silverware and glassware.  

Linens aren’t provided, so plan to bring your sheets, pillowcases, blankets, towels, bath mats, kitchen towels and cloths.
