Winter activities at Powhatan State Park
Cold weather can make it harder to motivate yourself to get outdoors, but don’t let that be the reason you miss out on the various unique winter activities at Powhatan State Park.
Birdwatching is ideal in the winter and as Powhatan transitions from winter to spring there are so many more birds you can see and hear at the park. Rangers will lead hikes and many other programs to highlight each season as well as the plants and wildlife in the park.

As always, it’s key to check out the park’s Know Before You Go page before any visit, especially when rain or winter weather is in the forecast.
Hiking
Discover 12 miles of scenic, multi-use trails that invite you to explore the park’s rich natural diversity. These trails wind through a variety of habitats, from open field edges alive with songbirds to peaceful upland pine forests and towering stands of mature hardwoods. Whether you’re hiking, biking or simply strolling, every turn offers a new perspective and a chance to connect with nature. With trails suited for all skill levels, it’s the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families.

Hiking the trails is the best way to spot wildlife while exploring the park and there are plenty of ranger-led hikes that can put more pep in your step. There are hikes to the cemetery that discuss the park’s history, wildlife hikes that are ideal for birdwatching and tree identification hikes that help you better understand the environment around you.

There are self-guided activities if you prefer a solo adventure. Be sure to check out the park trail guide for more information about the terrain.
Birdwatching
Wildlife is abundant at Powhatan State Park so it is very common to see some birds and animals along your hiking trail. Deer, wild turkey and a wide array of birds make their home in these landscapes, offering excellent opportunities for photography and quiet observation.
The woodcock, also known as the timberdoodle, is a bird well known for its very special “sky dance” and it can be seen at Powhatan during the winter and early spring months. There are ranger-led hikes that talk more about the species and allow for a chance to see and hear this magnificent bird. Check out the Woodcock Watch program for more information.

The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place the second weekend in February and this year’s count takes place during Valentines Day weekend. There will be a birding event at Powhatan that allows you to participate and contribute to science.
Be sure to bring your binoculars and enjoy the trails all season long.
Crafting and Nature Journaling
Devising art with natural things found outdoors is a great way to connect with nature while flexing your creative muscles. Powhatan offers some nature journaling programs that pairs the local library with park staff to help you produce some amazing art. Join Master Naturalist Mary Larson at the Powhatan Library for a hands-on workshop introducing the art of nature journaling—no experience needed. Explore seasonal subjects, build observation skills and connect with the outdoors through simple, curiosity-driven activities. Register here to reserve your spot today.

Crafting is another fun way to learn about the materials used in everyday life. Come sit around a cozy campfire as you learn to harness the power of plant fibers to make basic cordage. Check out the park’s Campfire Craft program for more information.
Volunteering
Getting outside and involved with the community can be good for your mental and physical health. Don’t let the cold keep you indoors. If you are interested in making a positive impact on our public lands, then you should consider volunteering. Do you have some spare time and energy combined with a passion to help continue to make Virginia State Parks beautiful for all visitors to enjoy? If so, you would be an amazing asset as a volunteer at Powhatan State Park.
Each park has a Friends Group that helps with events and programs to keep visitors engaged while elevating their park experience. You can attend the kickoff meeting to learn more about how you can get involved at Powhatan.

Volunteers are the heart of Virginia State Parks. With 44 parks across the Commonwealth, our volunteer opportunities are as diverse as the landscapes we protect. Whether you’re clearing trails, removing invasive plants, helping identify wildlife, or sharing the rich history of our parks with visitors, there’s a role for you. Whatever your interests or passions, you’ll find a welcoming place to make a difference.
The more hours you volunteer, the more rewards you earn. Earn loyalty points when you volunteer and redeem them for discounts on annual passes, camping, and cabin rentals. Learn more about our loyalty program here.
